Buffington House Expansion
San Jose, CA

SIZE: 9,000 s.f.
DATE: 1992
COST: $800,000

The Buffington House is a San Jose historic landmark representing Queen Anne Victorian architecture. MBA Architects developed the preservation rehabilitation plan, converting the house, carriage house, and ancillary structures to office use while restoring the historic presence and prominence of the original home. Scope of work included PD rezoning and City site/Architectural Review permit. A period wrought iron fence and gate were added and a Victorian garden landscape scheme was adopted.

The Buffington House is now a focal point of downtown Willow Glen Business District street fairs and includes the Willow Glen live Christmas tree as part of its landscape. This project was completed in 1988 for Pacific Diversified.

In 1991 a "compatible" office building addition of 9,000 sf was designed to straddle the parking behind the historic home. The building was constructed several years later.
